October 14, 2008-Vernon Hills, IL-Baxter Credit Union (BCU) is committed to protecting consumers from becoming victims of identity theft. Their first "Shred Day" will be held on Saturday, October 25th from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm at their Vernon Hills and Crystal Lake branches.

Shred Day is where members of the community are invited to bring two boxes of their personal financial documents for free and secure on-the-spot disposal, which will take place in BCU's parking lot with professional shredding vehicles. In keeping with BCU's "green" focus, the shredded papers will be recycled.

Identity theft, still on the rise, affects as many as 9 million Americans a year - or one person every three minutes. The damage can take hundreds of dollars and countless hours to repair. "Proper disposal of sensitive material is a critical component in protection oneself from identity theft," says CEO Michael Valentine. "In addition to our education and awareness programs, we are eager to help the community by providing this opportunity."

A personal shredder will be raffled off at each location and refreshments will be provided. The participating BCU branches are located at 340 North Milwaukee Avenue in Vernon Hills and 415 South Main in Crystal Lake.
